About this course

Chapter-by-chapter support for the new Grade 4 science curriculum: observing living things, tracing how insects and plants grow, investigating light, sound, wind and rubber forces, and exploring soil, water and life in Egypt.

Academy-authored content and assessments – not an official exam.

Course highlights

  • Observe living things in the environment with suitable tools, record observations by drawing and writing, and compare living things by shape, colour, size and place
  • Identify the body parts of an insect, describe the life cycles of a butterfly (egg–larva–pupa–adult) and a grasshopper (egg–nymph–adult), and tell insects from other small animals
  • Describe how a plant grows from seed to seed and name the functions of root, stem and leaves
  • Show that light travels in straight lines and can be reflected by mirrors, and relate the amount of gathered light to brightness and warmth (safely)
  • Explain that sound is made by vibration, relate loudness to the size of the vibration, and show that sound travels through materials
  • Show that wind can move objects and that stronger wind moves them further, using a fair test
  • Show that stretched or twisted rubber can move objects and that more stretch gives a stronger push, using a fair test
  • Describe how water flows from high to low ground and soaks differently into sandy and clay soils, and relate soil and water to life in Egypt
  • Build a simple closed circuit with a battery, wires and a bulb, explain why the bulb lights only in a closed loop, and sort materials into conductors and insulators (battery circuits only) (t2, provisional)
  • Test which objects a magnet attracts, find that magnets attract iron through some materials, and show that like poles repel and unlike poles attract (t2, provisional)
  • Show with a balance that an object's weight does not change when its shape changes, and that objects of the same size can have different weights (t2, provisional)
  • Observe that a shadow forms on the side away from the sun, relate the change in shadow direction and length during the day to the sun's apparent movement, and compare ground in sun and shade (t2, provisional)
