About this course

Support for the developed 2026/27 S2 physics book: measurement, straight-line motion and Newton's laws, moving and static fluids, and the gas laws – with worked problems and safe practicals.

Academy-authored content and assessments – not an official exam.

Course highlights

  • Distinguish fundamental and derived quantities, use SI base units and measuring tools, derive dimensional formulas and SI units of derived quantities, check equations dimensionally and estimate measurement errors
  • Describe straight-line motion, draw and interpret displacement–time and velocity–time graphs, distinguish kinds of speed and velocity, and use acceleration and the equations of uniformly accelerated motion (incl. free fall)
  • State and apply Newton's three laws, explain inertia, and use momentum and F = ma in everyday situations
  • Use density and relative density (with medical examples), distinguish streamline from turbulent flow, apply the continuity equation (A₁v₁ = A₂v₂) and the flow rate, and explain and calculate viscosity
  • Calculate pressure at a point in a liquid (P = Pa + ρgh), measure relative density with a U-tube, explain the barometer and manometer and pressure units, and apply Pascal's principle to the hydraulic press
  • Explain Brownian motion and apply Boyle's law, Charles's law and the pressure law, deduce absolute zero, and solve problems with the general gas law
  • Calculate work (W = F d cos θ), kinetic and potential energy and power, and apply the conservation of mechanical energy
  • Describe simple harmonic (oscillatory) motion – amplitude, period, frequency – and wave motion (transverse and longitudinal), and use v = f λ
  • Apply the laws of reflection and refraction (refractive index, Snell's law), explain interference and diffraction (Young's experiment), total internal reflection and the critical angle, and deviation in a prism with minimum deviation
  • Describe uniform circular motion and calculate centripetal acceleration and force in everyday situations
  • Apply Newton's law of universal gravitation, find g at a planet's surface, and calculate the orbital speed and period of a satellite
