About this course

Chapter-by-chapter support for the new Grade 5 science curriculum: bones and muscles, seasonal change, conditions for germination and growth, from flower to fruit, how humans and animals grow and reproduce, weather and the water cycle.

Academy-authored content and assessments – not an official exam.

Course highlights

  • Describe how bones and muscles work together to support and move the body, the structure of bones and the whole skeleton, and compare with animal bodies
  • Describe how plants and animals change through the year and how animals respond to temperature
  • Identify the parts of a seed and show with fair tests that germination needs water, air and a suitable temperature
  • Show with fair tests that sunlight and fertiliser affect plant growth
  • Describe the parts of a flower (luffa), use a microscope correctly, and explain pollination and how fruits form
  • Describe the stages of human growth, similarities between parents and children, and the conditions for healthy growth
  • Compare animals that give birth with animals that lay eggs and explain how animals preserve their species
  • Relate clouds to weather, track cloud movement and make a simple weather forecast
  • Explain evaporation, water vapour in the air and condensation, and trace where water goes in the water cycle
  • Show with a syringe that air can be compressed and pushes back while water cannot be compressed, and give uses of compressed air (t2, provisional)
  • Show that solids, liquids and air expand when heated and contract when cooled, and describe how heat travels through metal (conduction) and through water and air (convection) (t2, provisional)
  • Observe and record the changing shape of the moon and its movement across the sky, and describe stars by brightness and colour and star patterns (t2, provisional)
  • Measure the time of 10 swings of a pendulum and show with fair tests that the time depends on the length, not on the mass (t2, provisional)
  • Show that a dissolved substance is still there (mass is conserved), that only a limited amount dissolves, and that temperature and stirring affect dissolving (t2, provisional)
